it's all in the skirt.

As it gets colder outside, I've been challenging myself to work my summer staples into my winter wardrobe.  This skirt was an absolute essential for me during the warmer months.  It was even featured in one of my first posts in August (see here ).  While it was cool outside today, it wasn't too chilly, and I knew that this skirt would be perfect with my more layered look on top.  I love getting the most out of my clothing, don't you?

purple sparkle.

Revlon Bold Sangria, OPI Grape...Set...Match, Revlon Sparkling
Revlon's ColorStay nail polishes for this season have been getting a lot of hype lately, so I decided to try a few out.  Bold Sangria is definitely one of my new favorites.  It comes out much darker than it looks in the bottle, but I like that.  It's one of the deeper, more intense purples I've encountered during my nail polish experiments, and I think it's just perfect for wintertime.

luxe christmas.

Luxe Christmas

I got super excited about the holidays last night after I decorated my Christmas tree.  It came out beautifully and got me thinking about my own look for this season.  With all the holiday parties coming up, now is the time to start planning out a few luxe, seasonal outfits that can keep you comfy and look cute at the same time.  I know this one would be perfect for me and I plan on looking out for some of these styles on my upcoming shopping trips!

dipped in glitter.

OPI Extra-Va-Vaganza!
OK, how amazing is this nail polish?  I have been on the search for the sparkliest nail polish possible for a while now, and I think I may have found it.  One coat is pretty glittery but two coats makes it look like you literally dipped your nails in a tray full of glitter.  Needless to say, I love it.

smile.

My latest Pinkberry concoction: chocolate hazelnut yogurt, coconut, pirouline cookies, organic gummy bears, chocolate covered pretzals, hazelnuts, and caramel sauce
I am an optimist.  I believe it's better to look on the bright side than to bog myself down with the negative.  Because of this, I like finding little things that bring joy to the average day.  In other words, I look for things that make me smile.  So, every so often, I will make smile-worthy posts that have brightened up my day and will hopefully inspire you to find happiness in the small stuff too.

at the met.

I went to the Met last weekend with some friends to see Turandot.  The opera was absolutely amazing, but I could not get enough of these gorgeous chandeliers.  Their sparkle combined with the shimmery quality of my dress made me so excited for the upcoming season.  What about you all? Are you as excited for the holidays as I am?

in the black.

Black is the easiest color ever.  Literally all you have to do is throw on a bunch of black and you have an outfit.  Sometimes it feels like I'm cheating when I do this because it's so simple.  But I firmly believe that all or mostly black outfits can be good things, especially when you play with prints and textures.  Just make sure you don't wear them every day.

feeling blue.

OPI Into the Night, Sephora blue nail polish (accent nail)
I was never really into blue nail polish.  Then I found this OPI one from the Spiderman collection and everything changed.  Everything.  Now, this is probably my third favorite nail polish, behind OPI's Romeo and Juliet and I'm Not Really a Waitress because reds will always be my favorite.  Still, the fact that such a color could climb to the top of my polish ranks is a pretty astounding feat.

prep girl.

Tommy Hilfiger dress, Who.A.U. cardigan, (gifted) shoes, American Eagle necklace, Forever 21 earrings
I don't like holding myself to one specific style.  Maybe it's the Gemini in me, but I change my mind too much to stick to only one type of look.  Besides, it's way more fun to change things up.  Today I was feeling preppy (don't ask me about the specifics, it was just an overall vibe).  I also needed an excuse to wear this dress, which is actually way better than the average dress because it has a tulle lining!  I mean, how much better can it get?

neon & florals.

American Eagle shirt, Free People skirt, Qupid flats
I don't know why, but for some reason I am constantly attracted to faded neon orange shirts.  I am completely aware that this is a strange and very particular obsession but I can't seem to help myself.  As a sidenote, shirts of this color always end up being soft and comfortable, which is such a selling point for me.  The only problem is that I end up with too large of a section of bright orange tees in my closet.  Oh well...

retro vibes.

American Apparel shirt and pants, Aeropostale belt, Fusion shoes, (Assorted) bracelets
I'm really into high-waisted things.  I don't know about the rest of you, but I just prefer to wear pants or skirts that come to my waist instead of ones that sit on my hips.  These high-rise pants give off a retro vibe, which I was totally feeling with a cropped, waist-tie blouse and some sling-back wedges.  Throwback outfits can definitely be a good thing.

organization station.

The whole organization station.
On the top: chapsticks, hand sanitizer, eye primer, moisturizers, blush, bronzer, powder, foundations, mascara, concealer, liquid eyeliner, brushes, makeup remover, sunscreen, deodorant

Drawer 1:  Lip goodies including favorites like Beauty Rush lip gloss, Burt's Bees lip tint, Clinique lipstick/gloss duos, and Clinique chubby stick
Drawer 2:  Eyeshadow palettes...I'm a big fan of Urban Decay and Clinique eyeshadows.  The Naked palette is the best!
Drawer 3: Hair products.  I use a lot of Garnier Fructis frizz-fighting products.  My self-tanner is also in here.
Drawer 4:  The Remington line of hair stylers is absolutely amazing for my thick hair.
I had been trying unsuccessfully for years to find a way to organize my makeup in a way that would allow me to see everything.  Recently though, I found this storage cart that works perfectly for my purposes.  It holds absolutely everything.  Plus, it's great waking up in the morning and knowing exactly where each product is.  No more searching through three different makeup bags for me!

dressing the part.

Julie's Closet dress, Charlotte Russe skirt (underneath), Fusion shoes, Coach purse
I love getting dressed with a certain event in mind. Today's outfit was for a trip to a nice Italian restaurant with some family. This dress just felt right. I'm not sure whether it was the light material or the warm colors, but I was definitely feeling it.

up to my knees.

Ok, knee-high boots are awesome.  I don't know why it's taken me so long to realize this, but I have and now there is no turning back.  Wearing these today was great.  I felt tough and chic at the same time.  I also had the urge to find everything with silver embellishments in my closet and add it to my outfit...so I did.

spotted.

Members Only jacket, Twelve by Twelve cardigan, Abercrombie & Fitch jeans, Capelli New York wellies

I was not kidding when I said I loved leopard print.  Seriously, it's a love affair that I don't see ending any time soon.  These wellies were picked up as soon as my well-trained leopard print tracking eyes spotted them.  They are absolutely perfect for rainy days, which are happening a lot lately.  Where is the beautiful crisp fall weather that I love?

mini trendsetters.

From left: Mac Immortal Gold , OPI Just Spotted the Lizard, , Revlon Spanish Moss, Sally Hansen Crackle Antiqued Gold , OPI Servin' Up Sparkle, H&M rings
OPI Romeo & Juliet, OPI Bright Lights Big Color, Various sparkle nail polishes, H&M scarf
Nails are, in my opinion, a seriously underestimated part of the fashion experience. Instead of leaving them plain and expressionless, why not coat them in the season's latest color or pattern? Take for example, my oxblood nails above which pair perfectly with my new favorite scarf. Accent nails are also great and give a pop of color (or sparkle) to any basic manicure. There are so many possibilities at, and for, your fingertips.

print mixer.

Urban Behavior tank, Forever 21 skirt (modified), belt (borrowed from sister), (gifted) shoes

Mixing prints seems so much harder than it actually is.  For example, as I stood in front of my closet this morning, I was unsure whether polka dots could successfully mix with plaid.  When it came down to it though, there was nothing to fear.  As long as there is some color overlap (in this case gray and black) the pattern combination should be just fine.

watercolor stripes.

Forever 21 top, Hiatus skirt, Claire's earrings, (Unknown) sandals

This summer I was really into colorful, flowy tops.  I bought this one as the season was winding to a close, but I feel like it still has more life to it.  It is simply cut and will look great under some cozy fall cardigans.  I'm also loving the zipper pocket.

leopard beginnings.

Aeropostale jacket, Material Girl dress, American Eagle belt and necklaces

It's about time I provided an example of my love for leopard print.  Honestly, it is love.  I simply cannot get enough of it, which is why it shows up on a decent amount of the clothing and accessories in my closet.  At this point, it has basically turned into a neutral.  So, when I found this dress, I knew it was for me.  Definitely a good decision on my part.

in the parking lot.

American Eagle tank, Old Navy khakis, Bucco sandals, Forever 21 necklace, Coach purse, (Gifted) earrings

I decided to stage an impromptu photo shoot outside of a restaurant before going in to eat with my grandparents. It was hard to concentrate on everything while so many good smells wafted through the parking lot. Luckily, we managed to take a few before my appetite got out of control.

weather wise.

American Eagle shirt, Forever 21 skirt, Benetton belt, Claire's earrings, Dollhouse sunglasses

Warm weather days require loose, comfortable clothing that preserves pretty. A belt is a great complement to breezy pieces because it hints at shape while still holding the outfit together. I love how a flowy red (my favorite color) skirt can be graceful and powerful at the same time. It's just right for spending the day out and about. Not to mention that it looks really cool when the wind blows just a little.

the beautiful outdoors.

Hollister tank top, Charlotte Russe skirt, Claire's earrings

There is a lovely land preserve nearby that I visited on a particularly sunny day. The whole area looked so incredibly green and I couldn't help but notice that my floral skirt blended in perfectly. Don't you just love when fashion and nature come together?

Monday, August 13, 2012

hello.

It is one hot summer. The long days are filled with everything from sweltering temperatures and stuffy rooms to poolside retreats and delicious cold drinks. In the midst of all of this, I have decided to begin a blogging journey. I want to share with you my fashion adventures, beauty trials, and daily explorations. Basically, I plan on recording anything that makes everyday events a little more special. As a wise teenager once said, “Life moves pretty fast. If you don't stop and look around once in a while, you could miss it,” (Ferris Bueller's Day Off). I'm trying to make sure I don't miss anything.
